Welcome to English 8!

My name is Stephanie Mohs and I will be your instructor!  If you'd like to get to know me a little better, check out my blog at www.mylifeasasimile.com!  Two bonus points to the first person who tells me what a simile is and two additional points for elaborating on what my title could possibly mean!  Email me at smohs@northbranch.k12.mn.us with your answer!  *HINT* If you don't know what elaborate means, Google it!

Contact Information:  Please feel free to contact me at #1363 or via email at smohs@isd138.org.  For those of you on site, I am in room #704; stop by and say hello!

Brief Outline of Things to Come:

We are going to touch on some tough ("tuff" if you're a Greaser) subjects this year with topics such as friendship, moral and ethical choices, family problems, consequences of our actions, and making the right decision! Novels we will read include The Outsiders and The Diary of Anne Frank.  Mythology is always a fun Unit and Poetry proves to be more exciting than it sounds.

I can't wait to get started! Be sure to click on my name (Stephanie Mohs) below after you watch the video!

We often see personal introductions and contact information at the bottom of a page or document. I like the way that you have it posted at the top of yours, and I hope that you keep it there! It serves as a welcome and really sets a positive tone when students start to read.

Steph.. your Weird AL video is an awesome hook! I actually hit play before I started typing and had to wait till the end to comment because I was so wrapped up in it. Nice job!

I like your bonus point activity about what a simile is. That will get the competition juices flowing!

I really like your blog, and how you relate your life to a Simile. A suggestion would be to include a link back to the Wiki from your blog page. I loved how your picture was in the background, but I found the white menu writing very hard to see. The YouTube video is great--Weird Al is so funny:) I have to admit though, that when it said "shut up" at the beginning I gasped. I am not used to hearing those words, because it is forbidden to say in my house.

It's Weird Al, a lot of things about him are shocking! Overall, I believe it's a great way to hook the students initially and in the end, does more good than harm.

I spread the lesson out among more than one page...If you click NEXT on the bottom of each page, it will take you to the lessons, etc.

Starting off your lesson with extra credit as your launch is a great way to get your students involved! Most students love getting extra credit and making them utilize different modes of technology to do so is a great tool! Well done!

I love, love, the extra credit launch. My views on extra credit after this course have changed. I used to see it as a cop out for students who slacked to get a desired grade at the end of the quarter. Now, through Dr. B's extra credit in this course, and your ideas here, I am seeing it as an extremely valuable too. If I put effort into designing extra credit that has meaning and value, in a way, I am sort of tricking the into doing extra supplemental and meaningful work! Very cool!

Your simile intro make me *smile*. Weird Al Word Crimes is absolutely BRILLIANT. Who does not love the Kid President. You should have their attention by now.

10% Provided feedback. You have been a wonderful resource to your peers. Well done.

40% two menu items from each section in the No Fail Format.
Liberal use of technology-PAdlet, . Connected to their personal life world. I liked Learner Objectives in the first person with “CAN” . I may adopt that modification. Re: Eval. I would add two short answer questions. 1. What was useful? What needs modification. I have found these two data points critical to keeping the course current over the years.

40% INTERACTIVE critical and creative thinking
• I like the way you put each section on a “next” page.
• Anne Frank =Connected to PLW : “Compare the persecution of the Jews to something happening in today's world.” Good. Re: Perfect Hide Out. Excellent - but shouldn’t they identify WHY they need to hide? Re: Diary with Prezi=Brilliant.
• Rubric LOL= I have now said it 1000 times! Loved the Why Technology material
